LEBANON (AP) - Missouri conservation officials end the experiment with hand fishing after two years. The Conservation Commission voted today to immediately end an effort to decide whether to legalize the practice also known as noodling. The commission had planned to allow hand fishing for five summers along three rivers and gauge its effect on Missouri's catfish population. Noodlers use their bare hands to reach in and grab for fish with sharp teeth that can weigh up to 100 pounds. They can also wind up with snakes, beavers or snapping turtles instead. But scientists have found higher-than-expected mortality rates among catfish in state waters, and conservation officials are considering whether there should be more limits on all types of catfish fishing.
