State Grant Helps Restore Historic Home
Thomas Hickman was a businessman from Kentucky who left his imprint on Missouri in the 1800s. Columbia residents honored him by naming Hickman High School after him.
State Sen. Bill Stouffer of Napton believes in bringing history to life.
"Too often we lose touch with our heritage," he explained. "And this is an opportunity to remodel and bring back to its original form that house that was so important in the original settlement of Howard County."
The county's history includes the start of the Santa Fe Trail in Old Franklin. The Hickman House is one of the oldest brick homes still standing west of the Mississippi River.
