CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Division of Family Services is trying to recruit black families to adopt some of Missouri's 1,900 foster children waiting for homes. Nearly a third are black. While a growing number of white families in the U.S. are adopting children of another race, in Missouri, the number of transracial adoptions has remained the same over the last few years. Last year, more than 1,200 children were adopted through DFS. White families accounted for 927 of those adoptions, in which 121 of the children were black. Kelly and Scott Bright, a white couple from Jackson, adopted four biracial children after caring for more than 100 foster children. Their first daughter died from a brain tumor at age nine. The Brights say they have become friends with several black families they met at adoptive parent support groups.
