Stephens College Hosts Town Hall After Assault
COLUMBIA (AP) - Stephens College will hold a campus town hall meeting on Friday after a former student reportedly assaulted a current student at the Columbia women's school.
The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that Stephens president Dianne Lynch is launching a diversity initiative to promote civility on campus after several troubling incidents at the 177-year-old school.
Most recently, a 19-year-old former student allegedly attacked another student in the campus union last week, pulling the woman's hair while repeatedly punching the back of her head.
A Columbia police spokeswoman says the victim was not injured but wants prosecutors to issue an arrest warrant for third-degree assault. Lynch says the alleged attacker has withdrawn from Stephens after being suspended from school for an unrelated matter in March.
