Storms Takes First at Missouri Cross Country Challenge
COLUMBIA - The Mizzou men's and women's cross country programs hosted the Missouri Cross Country Challenge Saturday (Sept. 10) at A.L. Gustin Golf Course. The Tigers competed against archrival Kansas and a small group of runners from Central Methodist University on a sunny and dry day, and the good conditions allowed many athletes to post impressive finishing times. Mizzou finished second to KU in both the men's and women's team competitions, but several Tiger harriers excelled in the three-team event.
Junior Max Storms (Kansas City, Mo.) topped the podium in the men's 8K with a final time of 26:43.07, more than 11 seconds ahead of KU freshman James Wilson, who finished second. Senior Kyle Rood (St. Peters, Mo.) also turned in a strong performance for the Tiger men, coming in seventh at 27:10.81. Mizzou freshman Bryant Blahnik ran unattached and finished 12th, ahead of a Tiger trio of Dan Quigley (St. Louis, Mo.), Merid Seleshi (Ontario, Canada) and Hayden Legg (Mexico, Mo.). Other Tigers who competed in the men's race were sophomore JT McCarthy (Burlington, Iowa) in 17th place, senior Kevin McKee (Kansas City, Mo.) in 20th, and sophomore Kevin Krumrey (Chesterfield, Mo.) in 21st. Freshman Sam Dickerson finished 28th and senior Blake Irwin (Bettendorf, Iowa) was 30th, both running unattached.
In the women's 5K, a trio of freshmen led the Tigers. Liz Reida finished fourth with a time of 18:18.24, while Courtney Brown came in seventh and Courtney Wood was eighth. Senior Aimee Bonte (Fenton, Mo.) finished 10th, while senior Laura Roxberg (Overland Park, Kan.) came in 12th, sophomore Maggie Priebe (Wausau, Wis.) finished 13th. Other Mizzou competitors in the women's side were freshman Maria Effinger (18th), junior Chelsea Chrisman (Eureka, Mo., 19th) and freshman Brianna Westervelt (22nd).
The Tigers will now take a three-week break from competition, with their next meet scheduled for Sept. 30 in South Bend, Ind., at the Notre Dame Invitational. For the latest updates on Mizzou Cross Country, stay tuned to MUTigers.com.
