Student Angered By Raised Prices in Parking Tickets
Brandon Bostian has experienced the increase in parking fines first hand.
"I basically parked in a staff lot, and I only have a commuter permit," Bostain said. "It was before 5:00pm so I parked illegally. But the fine for that use to be $10 and effectively this year they've raised it to $25."
Bostian said that fine increase was as illegal as his parked car. He pointed out that section 11.02 of University of Missouri's traffic and parking regulations states that "... Fines for traffic and parking violations shall be subject to approval by the board of curators."
Bostian found no curators' meeting minutes regarding parking and transportation fines in the past year.
"I appealed the ticket on the grounds that the fines were improperly amended," said Bostain.
Parking and transportation denied the appeal. Stating in the appeal decision letter that "the ticket fine increase was reviewed with MSA and endorsed by the student court and passed by the committee.
Questioned about the curators' role, MU's director of parking, Jim Joy told KOMU, "If you are asking if these regulations are valid then yes, they are valid. The fines have been approved by all appropriate committees."
Bostian isn't buying it, and said he'll appeal to the next level.
The parking fine changes went into effect September 15 of this year.
