Jim Mauze joined the board of the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority when Blunt appointed him last October while the Legislature was out of session. Mauze would need Senate confirmation by Friday to continue serving. But the senator from his home district says she won't sponsor him, leading Blunt's office to say the governor will now seek a replacement. Democratic Sen. Joan Bray of St. Louis County says her decision stems partly from the 1998 dismissal of Mauze's law firm as counsel for the loan-agency's board. Documents obtained by The Associated Press say board members were concerned about some of the law firm's work. Mauze said today he believes the board simply wanted to hire a different lawyer.
