Students Volunteer at Urban Farm
COLUMBIA - Students from Douglass High School are encouraged to volunteer once a week with the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture. They help with all aspects of the farm, including picking weeds and caring for the chickens. Working on the farm is a learning experience for students.
John Reid, an environmental science teacher at the high school, feels that volunteering at the farm also helps the students attend school. "They seem to have more interest in school when we do these outdoor activities," Reid said.
Students also enjoy being productive on the farm rather than laying around the house.
