Summer of Insects
Working for the Conservation Department Reggie Bennet doesn't have the option of staying inside. Within a matter of minutes walking through the fields behind the Conservation Department building he was able to pick up a number of ticks.
Bug repellant is good, but it's not enough.
"The other really important thing is to check yourself frequently at least every 4 hours," Bennett said.
Reggie says even if you get a bite, you still have time as most ticks take awhile to get in your skin deep enough to infect you. So should Missourians stay inside? Reggie says no, and he's not alone.
"It's not gonna change my activity but it certainly raises my level of awareness and I'm watching very carefully when I come in from the outdoors," Gary Bangery said.
And the outdoors aren't so friendly during Missouri's summer tick season. The Department of Health is offering free bug repellant to low to moderate income families.
