The annual Cambio De Colores or Change of Colors conference is an effort to bridge the gap between immigrants and Midwest communities.
Sessions and guest speakers are discussing topics like health, education and civil rights for latinos and other immigrants.
"My main advice for both newcomers and for the people receiving them is try to learn from each other and try to understand before acting," said Domingo Martinez, director of the MU Cambio Center.
One session Monday discussed the population growth of Hispanics in Midwest counties. The Hispanic population increased in Boone County by more than 50 percent from 2000 to 2008. A rising population that cannot go unnoticed.
"We believe that newcomers, and statistics show that they're coming to stay. So we better prepare and work hard so we can benefit from that change," Martinez said.
The conference runs from Monday through Wednesday morning at the Stoney Creek Inn. The public is welcome to attend. For more information on the event and for a conference schedule visit the links above.
