The End of the Road
The bike race will be back in Missouri in the next two years. On the sixth leg of the race yesterday, cyclists did seven laps of a ten-mile plus circuit around a course in downtown St. Louis. Reflecting on the race's success, Gov. Matt Blunt says the inaugural Tour of Missouri could not have gone better.
"It exceeded our expectations. When we planned for this two years ago we would not have... greatest aspirations, dreamed that we would be one of the three biggest races in the United States and that we'd have a global audience with global competitors," said Blunt.
The Tour of Missouri is slated to be one of the top three professional cycling races in America. The early stages of the race saw more than 40,000 on-lookers in the Kansas City area alone. The Tour also brings health and physical fitness awareness, along with positive state promotion. Discovery Channel member, George Hincapie won this year's individual title in the Tour of Missouri by a margin of more than one minute. Team Slipstream-Chipotle won the team title with the Discover Team coming in second.
This was the last race ever for the Discovery Team on American soil. The Discovery Team is well-known because of member Lance Armstrong and his eight Tour De France wins.
