The Lake Digs Out
The storm destroyed three of the marina's nine docks and Schmidt doesn't expect them to return to normal until the weather warms up.
"It happened and, hopefully, it won't happen again for quite a long time," he said of the storm which dumped more than a foot of snow on the lake area.
Jeff Green is Ameren UE's shoreline manager. His company approves dock permits, but he said stricter standards would not have reduced the damage.
"The sheer amount of ice that was underneath the snow is what caused the heavy, heavy burden these docks were bearing," he explained.
Green also said most problems were with older docks, before Ameren introduced stricter regulations. But, Green admitted there is room to improve.
"Certainly there are some things that we need to focus on, I think, and there's some improvements that can be made" he added. "Some good will come out of this storm that relates to docks and their construction in the future."
Green said dock cleanup could take up to a year.
