COLUMBIA - The Missouri Lottery is introducing a new type of promotion. Over 1 million fortune cookies with lucky numbers inside will be distributed to Chinese restaurants through the state starting Nov 24.

By sponsoring the lucky numbers inside the cookies, the Missouri Lottery wants to encourage customers to pick their figures for various games.

This is the first time the Missouri Lottery decided to advertise in restaurants. "The Missouri Lottery is continually searching for fun and innovative ways to reach new players," said May Scheve Reardon, the executive director.

"What could be more unique than using fortune cookie message? We're anxious to see how customers respond to this new advertising medium," she added.

Some people choose their numbers from the fortune cookies. The 2005 New York State Lottery winners won after playing the numbers found inside.

Yan Revzin, the CEO of Fortune Cookie Advertising, a company responsible for distributing cookies to restaurants, said that this type of promotion proved to be successful. "Studies show that more than 99% of fortune cookies are opened and read, a number that is difficult to match with traditional forms of advertising," Revzin said.

Over 70 Asian restaurants in Missouri will participate in the promotion. 12 of them are in Columbia.
