The Osage Football team won its first outright tri-county conference championship since 1985 earlier this season. It's fair to say the team has undergone a lot of growth, on and off the field.

The Osage High School mascot is the Indian. So it's odd to see the skull and cross bones on some helmets and jerseys.

"If you play good defensively you get a black jersey. It's got the skull and crossbones on it for defense," Justin Williams said.

It's kind of like they're pirates. What are pirates known for? Beards.

"The beard thing is...I don't know," Coach Dan Henderson said.

Beards are everywhere on the Osage Football Team.

"Some people like to call it a playoff beard, but a couple of us started it before the season even started. Just a thing to keep us even closer. We'll talk about when we're in the shower we'll shampoo it and condition it and keep it nice and soft," Maher said.

"I only grow it down here so everyone makes fun of me for being Amish. I like to fluff mine every morning. Get it looking good before school. Make it puffy," Dylan Creek said.

Even some coaches are involved in the facial fuss.

"Coach Danes has a little goatee if you see him around. It's actually a defensive call when he pulls on it," Williams said.

Just don't expect Head Coach Henderson to do any hair raising.

"No, I'm not. Heck. I already don't have any hair," Coach Henderson said.

But Henderson does have plenty of offensive weapons, and few are more explosive than Jared Edwards.

"It's just amazing. Every time you see him take off you always have a hope that he's going to score and a lot of times it's not false," Creek said.

"We've got several plays that are just get it to Jared. We've got other kids right there along with him, too," Coach Henderson said.

Which leads us to the Indians issue.

"We ran into the problem we don't have enough footballs for everybody. We've got kids that need to have touches and it's sometimes hard to get them those touches," Coach Henderson said.

There is one other problem.

"There's a few of them that got them and there's a few of them that just can't."
"Beard gives everyone power. Everyone except me because I can't grow a beard. I'm Asian. Can't grow one. It doesn't come in very good," Williams said.

What is good is the Indians, and they know it.

"We know we got something special going on with the group of guys that we have and we just want to take advantage of that," Maher said.
