The Rios Story: A Look Back
"His hair was in my son's neck wound and he's saying I didn't kill him ... He can say all he wants. I know he killed him," said Linda Calencia, mother.
We remember Columbia police raiding the Rios' home. Rios threatened to jump off of a building and commit suicide. And it all ended in a dramatic trial.
"The same person that took his life took my life," said Steve Rios, convicted murderer.
His life has been reduced to 23 hours each day in his cell, no contact with other prisoners, and only one visit from family each month.
Steve Rios never thought he'd be reflecting on his life from behind protective glass. Before he was a husband, a father, and a police officer.
"I always thought at this point in my life I'd be doing different things," Rios said.
Back in 2005 he said he would appeal, now he hopes a new trial will deal with facts instead of hearsay.
