Theft Victims Frustrated With Sheriff, Store
“Through my own investigation, I discovered this man stole from several antique malls in Missouri. This is a statewide problem,” coin owner Rita Hinton said.
Hinton and her husband set up a shop inside the Artichoke Annie’s Antique Mall off I-70 in western Callaway County. Hinton said when her collection of coins were taken, it essentially put her and her husband out of business.
“The suspect stole so much money in merchandise that the only way I can sell my product now is through the internet,” said Jim Hinton.
The Hinton’s said they don’t feel the Callaway County Sheriff’s Department did everything it could to put the information out at the time of the crime. Sergeant Bob Smith, who is in charge of this investigation, refused to talk to KOMU 8 News on camera Thursday. But over the phone, he said the delay is partially his fault.
“I’ll take responsibility for not putting out a press release sooner. This happened because there was so much information coming in on this case as well as other cases that needed to be dealt with,” said Smith.
“My wife and I have been really frustrated over the last months trying to figure out what to do. My father died just three days after the incident and it’s really put a strain on us,” said Jim Hinton.
If you recognize the man in the photograph, please contact the local authorities.
