STARKVILLE, MS -- Three members of the William Woods University softball team earned NFCA NAIA All-Region honors as announced by the association Thursday. Senior Kelsey Schulte was tabbed as a second team selection for the Midwest Region, with sophomore Lindsey LeCuru and junior Ilissa Facchini earning first team honors.
This is the second honor for Schulte, who earned an at-large spot on the team after strong seasons at two positions for the Owls. She compiled a 11-7 record in the circle for WWU, making 23 appearances and hurling 14 complete games. She posted an ERA of 1.82 on the year, striking out 103. In addition to her work in the circle, she also appeared in all 50 games for William Woods on the 2012 slate, posting a .287 batting average and a team-high four home runs. She ended her career fifth in the Owls record books with 12 shutouts, 80 starts and 61 complete games.
LeCuru also earned an at-large spot, earning a first team nod following a strong season at the plate for WWU. The sophomore posted the second-best batting average on the team with a .368 mark, equaling Schulte's four home runs and cracking 18 doubles on the year, ranking 23rd in the NAIA and marking the second-best single season mark in team history.
Facchini earned a first team nod as a utility player after leading the Owls with a .380 batting average on the 2012 campaign. The transfer from College of the Sequoias started 46 games for William Woods, appearing in 49 contests overall, picking up a team-high 35 RBI for the Owls. She led the American Midwest Conference with 32 walks on the season, setting a new single-season WWU record in the process, with her on-base percentage of .519 the second-best single-season mark all time.
William Woods finished the 2012 season with a 31-19 record, with head coach Tracy Gastineau earning her 500th career victory - a 2-1 extra-innings win over then #19 Central Methodist University on the year.
