Tigers in the Shadow of a Legend

Coach Gary Pinkel added, "He's a little more vocal than Brad, but everyone's got their own personality. I think that's the most important thing. You have to be who you are. You can't go out there and try to be something that you're not."

Daniel might not carry the ball like Brad, but he does carry credentials. The former two-time Texas State champ is a former EA Sports High School Player of the Year.

"He wants to give his two cents. He always wants to make sure things are going right. He's always trying to tell guys, 'You're sliding, come back over here,'" said junior running back Marcus Woods. "He always wants to get the right play. I think he's a natural leader."

Missouri has named the four captains for the 2006 season: Seniors David Overstreet, Brad Ekwerekwu, Mike Cook and Dedrick Harrington. Two of them are wearing red injury jerseys. David Overstreet is practicing, but taking it light.

"I just need to keep being myself and I guess I'm a natural leader. I just need to continue to work hard and do things positive. Never do anything negative," he said.

Receiver Brad Ekwerekwu had his appendix removed 3 weeks ago and he's 3 weeks away from a return.

"It's just kind of frustrating, but at the same time I have to take my time," he said.

There are plenty of questions to answer this pre-season and the biggest position battle in camp is who's carrying the ball? Tony Temple and his off-season, off-field baggage, along with the injury-prone Woods, are the answer.

"I want everybody to compete like they want to be the starter and we're all friends and we're going to help each other out, but we have to act like we want it. We have to distinguish ourselves," Temple said.

The Tigers have less than four weeks to distinguish themselves, as the first test for the post-Brad Smith era comes Sept. 2 against Murray State at Faurot Field.
