Tigers Overpower Purdue in Season Opener
COLUMBIA - The No. 9 Missouri wrestling team began their 2011-12 season with a 21-15 win over the Purdue Boilermakers Sunday.
The Tigers forfeited at 125 but went on to win six of the nine remaining matches.
Junior Nathan McCormick faced Purdue's Matt Fields at 133 pounds, with McCormick winning 14-12 in sudden victory. After McCormick rode Fields out into overtime, McCormick took Fields down in seven seconds in the sudden victory period putting the Tigers on the scoreboard.
Senior Brandon Wiest tied the score at 6-6 with a 3-2 victory over Jake Fleckenstein at 141 pounds. No. 9 Ivan Lopouchanski took a 5-3 decision over Kyle Bradley at 149 pounds, giving Purdue a 9-6 lead.
Redshirt freshman Drake Houdashelt made his dual debut at 157 pounds, scoring an 11-4 win over Tommy Churchard. Sophomore Zach Toal won 7-4 against Kyle Mosier at 165 pounds, putting the Tigers 12-9 for their first lead of the match.
Senior Dorian Henderson defeated Drake Stein at 174 pounds by pinning Stein in 18 seconds, putting six points on the board for the Tigers. Junior Mike Larson synched the win for the Tigers with a 6-1 victory at 184 pounds over Braden Atwood, making it 21-9 Tigers.
The Boilermakers defeated the Tigers at 197 and heavyweight, with No. 13 A.J. Kissel defeating No. 11 Brent Haynes 7-2. Redshirt freshman Devin Mellon lost his first dual match by a 6-4 decision to Roger Vukobratovich.
The Tigers will travel to Oklahoma next week to face the Sooners and the Oklahoma State Cowboys in conference play.
