Time for Farming and Politics
Republican House Speaker Rod Jetton, wearing his country-best plaid shirt and jeans, unveiled his top-10 issues. Topping the list are ethanol and biodiesel. That's important to Keeven, who runs everything from his tractors to his irrigation pumps on diesel. But, with most farmers in the middle of the harvest, Keeven said the summit's timing seemed odd.
"Farmers are extremely busy right now," he noted. "So, if you're looking for farmer participation, that would almost be non-existent."
However, Jetton said the timing was good for him.
"When you start talking about making budget decisions, and trying to talk to the governor, and get everything for January, we just, unfortunately, had to plan it right now," he explained.
The timing may also have something to do with Jetton's re-election campaign, as he hopes to harvest support from agriculture. The other issues in his top 10 include a fast track for Departnment of Natural Resources permits and incentives to attract more students to veterinary schools.
