WATKINS GLEN, NY -- Coming off a Nationwide Series win on Saturday at Watkins Glen, Carl Edwards was looking to sweep the weekend on Sunday. Edwards had a strong Fastenal Fusion, but an untimely caution late in the race hurt his track position, resulting in a 14th-place finish.

Edwards started 18th at the second and final road course race of the season. He quickly moved up to 10th by lap 16 and was on the move to the front. Several cars began to make green-flag pit stops which moved Edwards up to sixth. He was just about to make his first stop when a full-course caution came on lap 27. The Blue Team had a quick stop and he restarted 10th since the cars who had already pitted lined up ahead of him.

He jumped back up to seventh during the restart on lap 30. Edwards was running sixth by lap 40 and moved up to fourth as the field once again began green-flag stops. Crew chief Chad Norris called him to the pits on lap 58 just as the caution came out again. Edwards had to make one more lap for the pace car to pick up the leader under caution which caused him to run out of fuel coming down pit road on lap 59. The crew had another good stop, but it took some extra time to get the engine fired which cost valuable track position.

Edwards restarted the race back in 20th on lap 62. He moved up to 17th on the restart and was up to 13th with 15 to go. He lost one position in the closing laps, but as the leaders raced hard several drivers spun in front of him. He was able to avoid the accidents, and move to the 14th-place finish.

Marcos Ambrose won the race followed Brad Keselowski, Jimmie Johnson, Clint Bower and Sam Hornish Jr. Greg Biffle, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Regan Smith and Martin Truex rounded out the top 10.

"It's a shame that caution came out when it did," Edwards said. "I knew it would be close on fuel running that extra lap, even under caution. Being out of gas made it tougher to get the car started on pit road after our stop. Then by the end of the race the Fastenal Fusion had lost rear grip so it was hard to get our track position back. Our car was better than a 14th-place finish, but we're already looking forward to racing at MIS next weekend. We have a very strong record there and it should be a good race for us."

Edwards and the Blue Team remain 12th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings, 43 points behind 10th place. The next race will be Sunday, August 19 at Michigan International Speedway. The race will begin at 12:00 p.m. CT on ESPN.
