BOONE COUNTY - Daniel Boone Regional Library opened its first Library To Go location Monday. The program lets patrons in Northern Boone County reserve material online or over the phone. The material is then placed in lockers at Ed's Quik Stop near Hallsville for patrons to pick up. They open book lockers with their library card.

This is all in an effort to keep the library up to date in this increasingly digital world.

"This kind of thing is evolving," said Marilyn McLeod, reference manager at the Daniel Boone Regional Library. "The technology keeps growing and we try to respond to that."

Kathy Casey has three young children and they usually visit the library four to five times per month.

"It would probably take us 25 to 30 minutes to get to the library in Columbia but from here it only takes us about six minutes from our house," said Casey. "It's very convenient."

Casey says she has been coming to that gas station for 20 years so this extra feature is welcomed.

The new book lockers make a surprising pop as they spring open. The set of lockers cost more than $17,000. It's part of a pilot program with the next location set as Holts Summit. The library is just trying to find a location for the lockers.

"We have a well-developed website... where we try to provide many of our services electronically," said McLeod. "We have many databases that are sources of excellent information and that we want to provide for the public."

As technology evolves, so does the library system. The library also has audio books on mp3 players, downloadable audio books, databases, and computer assistance available. Daniel Boone Regional Library serves about 2,000 patrons per day.
