Trooper shoots suspect after I-70, U.S. 54 pursuit
CALLAWAY COUNTY - Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating a trooper-involved shooting that happened Thursday night.
It started after a trooper tried to pull over 24-year-old Ronnie Lee on eastbound I-70.
MSHP said Lee ignored the trooper's request and kept driving east into Kingdom City. The trooper radioed for help, and another trooper responded.
The Highway Patrol said Lee's car briefly stopped in Kingdom City, and one male passenger got out of the car and ran off. The assisting trooper caught the man after a brief chase.
MSHP said the car chase continued after Lee kept driving, eventually going westbound on U.S. 54, entering Fulton and stopping on Dawson Street at 10:44 p.m.
At that time, the Callaway County Sheriff's Department was notified and deputies responded to help.
The trooper involved in the chase then radioed he was in a foot pursuit and shots had been fired, according to MSHP.
A preliminary investigation revealed Lee opened his car door before it came to a stop and showed a handgun as he got out of the car.
MSHP said the trooper fired several rounds and hit Lee once.
Lee was transported to University Hospital for treatment and has since been released.
MSHP said Lee was arrested for possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana, felony possession of a cocaine, felony resisting arrest, felony unlawful use of a weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, excessive speed and careless and imprudent driving.
The Highway Patrol said a loaded handgun was found at the scene and a computer check showed it had been reported stolen.
Lee was at the Callaway County Jail Friday evening.
