Twisters That Hit SW Mo. Claim About 3K Turkeys
GALENA (AP) - Turkey farmers have been rounding up stray birds after a tornado hit a couple of contract farms for Cargill near the small southwest Missouri town of Galena.
At one operation that housed 18,000 turkeys before Sunday's tornado, about 3,000 birds are dead or missing.
Cargill spokesman Mike Martin says about 80 people in the area spent the past few days rounding up stray birds that escaped from the wreckage of the Gabel operation. Pictures of the damage show twisted metal.
Another operation, Davis Ag, lost what was described as a minimal number of turkeys.
Martin says Cargill has donated food to groups such as Convoy of Hope that are sending volunteer employees to help serve meals in Joplin.
