COLUMBIA - The Boone County Sheriff's Department said Thursday it arrested two suspects in connection to an incident involving shots fired at a vehicle carrying children at a convenience store east of Columbia.

Deputies arrested 31-year-old Kalinda Carpenter (pictured left) and 23-year-old Micah McElmurry (pictured right) Wednesday in connection to the incident which happened on March 15.

Deputies said they responded to the disturbance at Petro Mart on St. Charles Road around 6:30 p.m. on March 15. They said the incident involved two groups of people whose children had previously been in an altercation.

Video surveillance showed Carpenter displaying a handgun in a threatening manner and several merchandise displays in the store had been knocked over, according to the sheriff's department.

Officials said the two groups left Petro Mart in separate vehicles. Carpenter's vehicle chased the other group's vehicle south on Grace Lane. McElmurry, who was in Carpenter's vehicle, was accused of firing multiple shots at the other group's vehicle hitting its rear taillight, deputies said.

Four children ages 6, 9, 11 and 12 were in the suspects' vehicle, and three children ages 12, 13 and 14 were in the victim's vehicle, according to the sheriff's department. None of the children were injured in the incident.

Both suspects were arrested around 3:40 p.m. at a home in Centralia. They have been charged with unlawful use of a weapon.

[Editor's Note: This story has been update to reflect the charges against both suspects.]
