Two Boone County libraries receive federal grants

BOONE COUNTY - Two area libraries received federal grants worth nearly $25,000. 

The Daniel Boone Regional Library received a $20,000 grant for a summer library program. The library will use the grant for a 10 week Books by Snail program.

The program lets children and teens order books through the mail for free. It focuses on reaching students kindergarten through 12th grade who live at least 12 miles from the public library.

"One of the best ways to engage children and young people in their local library is through summer library
programs,” Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft said. “The benefits of summer reading have been known for decades. Summer programs like the one at Daniel Boone Regional Library help people of all ages, but for younger people in particular, summer programs combat learning loss, improve vocabulary and often lead to higher student
achievement.”

The Centralia Public Library received a Technology Mini Grant in the amount of $4,765. The library will use the grant to buy six laptops, one charging station, and a 3D printer to address current and expected needs of library users.

“One of the best ways we can unlock and unleash the potential of Missourians is to teach them how to
think critically and how to learn,” Ashcroft said. “Unlike any other taxpayer-funded facilities or programs,
libraries offer that opportunity. Libraries are a place of learning, technology and knowledge. The
technology mini grants are so vital in this regard. Relatively small federal grants can make a huge
difference to Missouri libraries.”

The Marceline Carnegie Library in Linn County also received a Technology Mini Grant worth $9,741. Plus it received a summer reading grant worth $7,582. The Morgan County Library received a grant for a summer reading program, worth $4,825. 

The Library Services and Technology Act funds the secretary of state’s Technology Mini Grants and Summer Program Grants. The act is through the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, which is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 35,000 museums. 

In the 2017 Fiscal Year, the Missouri State Library has approved a total of 89 grant applications,
distributing $718,229 in federal awards to libraries throughout Missouri.
