Two Special Stars Visit Mid-MO
For Johnny Whitaker and Jeff East, Arrow Rock still seems like a home away from home.
The two got their big break here in 1972, when Hollywood came calling and chose them to play Tom and Huck in the film "Tom Sawyer."
But they weren't the only ones.
Casting calls in local newspapers attracted families trying to catch their moment of fame. And those chosen found more than just a moment in the spotlight.
35 years ago they shot the courthouse scene at the Arrow Rock museum. The only difference they used sugar in the windows for a stunt.
People in the movie spent this Fourth of July remembering what it was like to be on the set of Tom Sawyer.
"It's just great to come back here, and just feel all the old memories. It feels like I was here yesterday," said Jeff East, who played Huck Finn.
For East and Whitaker, they're just glad to be back with all their old friends.
The 35th anniversary marks the stars' first visit back to Arrow Rock.
