United Way hosting day of fundraising and donations
COLUMBIA - United Way is hosting a day of fundraising and donating on Thursday.
Heart of Missouri United Way is hosting its second annual "Live United Day" to promote local work in the mid-Missouri community.
Something different this year is that United Way is teaming with businesses to offer wearing jeans to work if you donate $5. United Way wants to make this more of an activity during the day and without disrupting work.
Executive Director Andrew Grabau said that 99 cents of every dollar donated stays local at 45 different programs to help people in poverty.
"As a community, we do live united," said Grabau. "We do a lot of great work together. Let's continue doing it."
Grabau said that they are careful about their money to make sure it is distributed correctly. United Way hopes to beat the $50,000 they raised last year.
"We look at how did we help the teenage mom graduate from high school? How did we help the family that needed help with their utility bill to keep the heat on?" said Grabau.
United Way is encouraging people to go online and use #LiveUnited, as well as texting UWHOPE to 41444.
