UPDATE: Investigators Determine Causes of Weekend Fires
COLUMBIA - Fire investigators have determined the causes of two fires that broke out over the weekend. On Friday July 5, authorities responded to a structure fire on Berkshire Court. Investigators have determined this fire originated at the base of a water heater in a utility room. The occupant of the home extinguished a majority of the fire with an extinguisher prior to the fire departments arrival.
A second fire that occurred on Saturday, July 6, at West Boulevard North, has been ruled as intentional. Fire investigators are working with the Columbia Police Department to discover more details. Anyone with information regarding this fire are urged to contact the Columbia Fire Department, Fire Marshal's Division at 573-874-7556.
The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor.
