COLUMBIA (Final update at 10 p.m.) - Most areas have received 1" to 3" of snowfall accumulation. Records were set on this date for snowfall totals.

As expected, some roads and surfaces are slick due to wet roads becoming colder, and freezing. Use caution especially on bridges. Remember, black ice is hard to spot!

Major roads were treated by MODOT Monday afternoon and will likely be treated again Monday evening to avoid widespread black ice.

Patchy ice is possible on roadways tonight/Tuesday morning.

Take a look at snowfall totals:

___________ORIGINAL POST_____________

SNOW TIMING

Overnight Sunday into early Monday, a weak system will push through. This could bring sprinkles, patchy sleet or flurries. Light snow is even possible for Saline, Chariton, Macon, Randolph and Monroe counties. This will end by 2-3am. Lows will drop to around 30 by sunrise Monday.

The main system for Monday will arrive from the WSW around 7am, and continue its push throughout the KOMU 8 viewing area through 10-11am, when all of mid-MO is expected to be experiencing snowfall. However, snow will be quite light north of I-70 (only flurries at times), with heavier (though still only moderate) snowfall south of I-70. This system will exit towards the Mississippi River throughout the afternoon, leaving mid-Missouri "dry" by 3-5pm. However, wind gusts up to 28 mph could still cause decreased visibility with blowing snow.

ROAD IMPACTS

Heading into Monday our soil temps are still around 40 degrees. This means that while accumulation on roads won't be a huge issue, roads will likely become wet. Bridges may become slick if not treated. As snow falls heaviest south of I-70, some accumulation (in the form of slush) is possible on roads if the melting can't keep up with the snowfall; this would create slick spots. The snowfall will also likely bring ground temps to around freezing as the day wears on, however, tracking the exact time that will occur is rather difficult. Use caution, drive smart and know that roads should be driveable at all times. Don't forget about reduced visibility due to the snow and wind combination.

SNOW ACCUMULATION

Areas north of I-70 will experience the least amount of snowfall accumulation, totaling up to 1-inch in most areas. Areas in the I-70 corridor will experience closer to one to two inches. Folks south of I-70, and closer to I-44, have the chance to see up to 3 inches of total snowfall accumulation.

TEMPERATURES

Air temperatures will remain around 30 throughout the day on Monday, cooling to the 20s after the snow exits. Wind chills will go from 20s into the 10s Monday afternoon; dipping into the 00s by Tuesday morning. Tuesday will be sunny and cold.

STORM MODE INDEX

As far as winter weather systems are concerned, this is not expected to be a major or even moderate event. We are currently in Storm Mode Index 1, on a scale from 0 to 5, for Monday.
