MARIES COUNTY - Prosecutors have charged Tracy Ellis with second-degree murder and child endangerment after a Sunday night house fire that killed her 14-year-old daughter.

Maries County deputies arrested the mother Tuesday.

14-year-old Ashlyn Ellis died in a house fire Sunday in Maries County, according to a Facebook post by the Maries County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Ashlyn Ellis attended the B. W. Robinson School for the Severely Disabled.

The sheriff's office said firefighters from the Vichy Fire Department responded to the fire on Maries County Road 438 around noon.

The sheriff's office, Vichy Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal's Office are all investigating the cause of the fire.

In its Facebook post, the sheriff's office said, "Our prayers go out to the family and everyone involved."

[CORRECTION: Maries County Sheriff's Office originally reported the victim was 13 years old. She was actually 14 years old.]
