FINAL UPDATE

COLUMBIA - The first winter storm of 2019 came and went. Heavy, wet snow weighed down on mid-Missouri. During the 48-hour storm the Columbia Regional Airport recorded 16.22 inches of snowfall. Some areas, namely Montgomery City, recorded up to 20" of snowfall. The combined totals from this system made it the 5th snowiest January on record, only halfway through the month.

This heavy snow took a toll on trees and power lines. Thousands were without power, some for more than a day. Power outages may continue into the new week.

Now that the snow has finished there are a few side effects that could still cause issues for mid-Missourians. Freezing fog is possible Sunday night and Monday morning. This would create a thin layer of ice on vehicles and other surfaces. Also, any wet roads that are not treated will re-freeze overnight.

Note that as snow melts throughout the week we expect it to re-freeze overnight. Always be on the lookout for patches of ice.

Here's a great recap of the fun had across mid-Missouri during the snow event! Check out the comments section on this post:

TIMING

SUNDAY: Leftover light snow showers will stick around for the morning with only clouds and flurries for the rest of the day. Temps are expect to reach, or be near 32 degrees with flurries and drizzle possible.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Areas of patchy freezing drizzle/fog are possible Sunday night - Monday as temps drop into the middle 20s. Snow/ice on roads are expected. Delays and cancellations can be expected to start the work and school week.

MONDAY: An early morning round of freezing drizzle/fog is possible until noon which would add a glaze of ice to untreated surfaces in addition to snow cover from the weekend. Temps are expected to climb above 32 degrees Monday afternoon with all precipitation ending midday.

SNOW ACCUMULATION

The worst is behind us, but some will still see heavy snowfall at times through Saturday evening. Only light snow or flurries are expected

At this time, a foot of snow is likely throughout much of mid-Missouri by Sunday afternoon. However, an area spanning from Boone and Cole counties eastward (especially Callaway county) has a good chance to see 15-20" due to heavier prolonged snow.

STORM MODE

On a scale from 0 to 5, we are in a Storm Mode 5 for this event.

If you don't need to drive during the snow, don't.

If you do have to drive during the snow please use extreme caution, of your own vehicle, of the road, and of other vehicles. Know your own winter weather driving ability and if you aren't comfortable driving in it, stay put. Nothing is worth your life or someone else's.

HAZARDS

Roads are slowly starting to get cleared, but plenty of slick spots will remain.

Side roads (at least) will still be covered on Sunday. This will be a wet snow, so the rate at which it will melt on roads is difficult to determine. Re-freezing is likely Sunday night heading into Monday morning, which may impact the Monday morning commute.
