Updike Finishes Season at Norman Regional
NORMAN, OK. -- Sophomore Rachel Updike completed the 2013 gymnastics season at the NCAA Regional Championships in Norman, Okla. Updike qualified to compete on both vault and bars at the meet, and she finished the season with two strong performances on the events.
Rotating with Southern Utah University, Updike competed on the balance beam in the first rotation earning a 9.825 score. She finished in a tie for eighth overall on the event. Updike also posted a strong score on the vault, earning a 9.850 score to finish in a tie for tenth place.
"Rachel did a great job tonight," head coach Rob Drass said. "I thought her beam routine was one of the best that I have seen her do and her vault was also excellent. Rachel did a great job of representing the University of Missouri at Regionals this year."
As a team, Oklahoma took first at the meet with a score of 197.375. The Sooners will advance to the NCAA National Championships April 19-21. Also advancing will be Stanford, who finished second at the meet with a team score of 196.800. The top two all-around competitors from non-advancing teams also qualify for Nationals, Washington's Laura Rogers and Penn State's Sharaya Musser tied for second in the all-around with a 39.375 score.
Oklahoma's Taylor Spears took the all-around title with a score of 39.525.
