Urban Farmers Say, Show Me the Money!
COLUMBIA - Urban farmers in Columbia welcomed Tuesday's announcement of a $20,000 grant to create a nationwide database on urban farming.
The grant, awarded to MU Professor Mary Hendrickson, will develop a website to give urban farmers nationwide a place to go to locate success stories, tips, and will be the first of its kind.
Carrie Hargrove has been involved with urban farming for years and said she thinks more Missourians will pick up their gardening gloves as a result of the database. She says urban farming gives residents a chance to save money, produce high quality goods, and help the environment.
Billy Polansky works with Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture and said in the past year, four new urban farms have popped up in Columbia, as well as two or three the year before. Polansky said more people need to take up farming as the current farmer population ages and moves to cities.
