"I'm no professional. I just go to coffee shops and visit a little bit," explained farmer Alan Leverett. "Carl Moore, this spring pumped a million-and-a-half gallons and he said that's no problem."
If conditions worsen, the town may impose mandatory conservation efforts. Measures could include shutting down at least one water-dependent type of business -- a notion already gaining support.
"If they're really concerned, then I think they should shut down the car washes," said Terry Eoff.
Winders says one option is connecting to a regional water district. Some residents fear that could drive up the cost of their water bills. In an attempt to pin down what that cost might be, KOMU contacted Vandalia's chief water plant operator Darren Berry. He refused to comment.
