Vandals Strike Airport Commuter Lot

Officials said most breakins occur during the day when people are at work. But, commuters who use the lot say the vandalism worries them.

Vandals smashed a side window of Kathy Lambert's vehicle two weeks ago, and it wasn't the only one. Lambert's husband also uses it to carpool with others at the commuter lot.

"It's easier than to try and find a spot to park," Lambert explained. "They drive one or two days a week. It saves gas." But, the vandalism cost the Lamberts $500 to fix their car.

Lambert said law officers should patrol the commuter lot more often. But, Jefferson City police and the Missouri State Highway Patrol said they already drive by problem areas.

"If we know there are problems in a certain area, we try to get our officers there as much as we can," said Patrol Sgt. Paul Reinsch, "just to again observe what's going on and try to deter anyone that might consider breaking in."

The Highway Patrol said the biggest mistake people make when parking in commuter lots is leaving valuable items like radar detectors in plain view, instead of locking them in the trunk or glove box. If someone breaks into your vehicle, don't touch anything and notify police so they can investigate.
