But, some drivers said they worry more about high gas prices than thieves.
"Definitely, that's why I moved down from an SUV to a sedan," said Cameron Cross.
Columbia police said most thieves here are just joyriders who take advantage of opportunities, then abandon the vehicles. Police also said more thefts could be because of careless drivers who leave vehicles running or keys in the ignition when they park them.
"Lock your car doors and put your packages out of sight and you will be less likely to be victimized by theft," said owner Bill Hillenbrand.
