JEFFERSON CITY - State officials are hoping a special day dedicated to honoring veterans will highlight their unique skill set and result in more hiring opportunities.

The Missouri Veterans Commission is hosting a "Hire A Veteran Day" event in Jefferson City on Thursday. Veterans, employers, and support groups will gather to celebrate the role veterans play in the work force.

Executive Director Grace Link said Governor Mike Parson will be on hand for the event. He is expected to designate July 25 as a day focused on the hiring and appreciation of veterans in Missouri.

In April, Parson announced an effort keep military veterans in Missouri after they complete their service. The outreach program will help veterans find jobs, education and training opportunities.

In a statement Parson said, "My goal is to make Missouri the best state in the nation for our veterans to live and work by connecting them with great employment opportunities and resources."

Link said having a day to appreciate veterans' role in the Missouri workforce is the best way to make them feel welcome.

"We want to thank the employers for hiring veterans and really highlight what veterans bring to the job," she said, "We're also hoping to connect veterans with open positions in Missouri."

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, veteran unemployment rates are the lowest since 2001. In June the department found 3.2 percent of veterans are unemployed.

"The type of job you want to do in the future might be different than the one you have been doing in the military the whole time," Link said.

She said businesses who may be looking to hire a veteran will not regret it.

"The biggest thing veterans bring to the table are their core values: honesty, integrity, excellence in all we do, and service before self," she said.

The event will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday morning at the Carnahan Memorial Garden in Jefferson City.
