Veterinarian and Tri-Athlete: One in the Same
COLUMBIA - Working with people can be laborous at times.
But for Jackie Pearce, working with animals causes the real stress.
"Veterinary medicine is a life and death situation many times with the patients. And so, that can be really stressful," Pearce said.
Such is the life of Pearce; She's an eye specialist at Missouri's Animal Clinic.
"Animal physiology just is never fail-safe. So, that's a stressful part too is not being able to ever guarantee a perfect outcome."
Although, imperfect outcomes can fuel the perfect outlet.
Pearce is a tri-athlete. Swimming, cycling and running make up her stress-relief. And she's so good at all three, she competed at Ironman Canada. Only 65 people from Ironman Canada qualified for the Ironman World Championships.
Pearce was one of them.
"With anything that you do, you always sort of have a goal. And working at the clinic with animals, you have a lot of short-term goals. Whereas with sports, and training, you sort of have a longer-term goal where you work toward it," Pearce said.
Now that long-term goal is on its last lap.
