Victim in Columbia shooting dies, three arrested on suspicion of murder
COLUMBIA - A man shot in the chest Thursday afternoon has died, and police arrested two men and one juvenile on suspicion of murder and other charges.
The shooting happened shortly before 1 p.m. on Claudell Lane. When officers arrived, they found two victims with gunshot wounds, with one person's injuries described as life-threatening. That victim, identified as 33-year-old Keith Chambers, died shortly after arriving at a hospital.
Officers later arrested Dariel Reid and Brian Smith, both 18 years old, as well as a 16-year-old juvenile. According to detectives, Chambers and Smith arranged to buy marijuana from Reid and the juvenile. An argument started during the deal, and gunshots were fired. Chambers was hit in the chest, and Reid was hit in the arm.
Police arrested Reid on suspicion of murder and distribution of a controlled substance. They arrested Smith on suspicion of murder, robbery, unlawful use of a weapon, and distribution of a controlled substance. The juvenile was arrested on suspicion of murder, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and distribution of a controlled substance.
On Friday, the Boone County Prosecutor's Office filed murder and robbery charges against Smith, and murder and distribution of a controlled substance charges against Reid.
