COLUMBIA - MoDOT wants drivers to foot more of the bill for road maintenance and improvements. Tolls on I-70 is under consideration, and the Missouri Senate is has given initial approval to charge higher taxes on gas.

MoDOT says its current budget will require the agency to leave more than 25,000 miles of roads largely unattended and the state is in danger of losing federal funding because of shortfalls.

The Missouri Senate voted Thursday to give initial approval to a measure that would increase the tax on gas. The bill would raise the tax on diesel fuel by 3.5 cents a gallon and on all other fuel by 1.5 cents. Diesel and gasoline both currently are taxed at 17 cents a gallon.

MoDOT is pushing for approval of a gas tax increase, but the measure is unlikely to pass in the state House, according to Speaker John Diehl. Republicans opposed the tax crease, say heavy truck drivers should pay more, because they cause more wear on roads.

The bill would increase the gas tax by two cents each year for three years. The Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission says each cent the tax is increased would yield $39 million per year for MoDOT.

MoDOT also recently released a report on a proposed toll for I-70, reaching from Wentzville to Independence. According to NBC affiliate KSDK, the 200 mile trip could cost drivers between $20 and $30.

Building the toll system would cost anywhere from $2 million to $4 million dollars, according to MoDOT estimates. MoDOT contends the project would provide more than 6,000 jobs and yield a $5.24 return on every dollar invested.
