Warm weather closes Stephen's Lake Park for ice skaters
COLUMBIA- Columbia Parks and Recreation closed Stephen's Lake Park for ice skating Friday.
Freezing temperatures in Columbia might have made locals want to go ice skating. The lake had been open for skaters since Monday.
With the warming temperatures later this week, ice skating outside has been cut short. Stephen's Lake Park is now closed to ice skaters because the temperature in Columbia is too warm and is causing the lake to thaw.
Normally, the temperature has to be below freezing for a significant amount time to allow skaters on the ice. Every year is different depending on the weather. In 2014, the lake opened for ice skaters on seventh of January. Before that, the weather was not cold enough to open the lake to ice skaters since 2011.
