Newer and better toys are coming out each year, but to what price to your children's health? They sing, they roar, they emulate the sounds of an instrument, but one mayo clinic doctor tells us some toys can cause some permanent damage.Nbc's jenna gordon has more in today's your health. And, one dad says, often times music and loud noise go hand in hand with those toys. "the education ones that do have some sound and different things like that. Music and talking cause she repeats what she hears," said chad wallaker. But, buyer beware, some toys can be harmful to your child's ear. "they don't really scale loudness like we do. Put your ear right next to it, if you find that sound to be uncomfortable, even if to the point where it's loud enough to give you sensations of pain, then you know the toy may be too loud for your child," said mayo clinic audiologist jon shalliop. Mayo clinic audiologist jon shallop says any toy making noise over 80 decibels is too loud and can cause permanent harm. "the speakers are here. If i put my ear near the speaker i can simulate. It's probably more like 85-90 decibels, but at the normal distance we're going to use it this toy is fine," said ? But, kids are kids, and shallop says it's parents' responsibility to teach them the right way to use a toy. "you have to teach your child to be careful, we don't go playing our stereo at house at 120 decibels because we know that's too loud, but it's different when you are younger. You don't think about those things," said ? "we'll usually play with them, the toys, with her right away so that she understands how to play with it," said ? Shallop says just use common sense. "if you're exposed to one loud sound that may not be harmful, but if you are exposed to a sound that's loud and happens 100 times a day that has the potential to change the hearing of the child," said ?That was nbc's jenna gordon. Shallop says your child should get a hearing test if he or she often asks you to repeat what you say or has speech and language problems.
