Water Quality Issues Cause Beaches to Close
JEFFERSON CITY — The Watkins Mill State Park swimming beach closed Wednesday following the results of water samples, according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The beach will remain temporarily closed until subsequent water sample results show that the water has returned to Missouri State Parks and Department of Natural Resources standards. Samples will be taken again on Monday, August 13.
Lincoln Beach at Cuivre River State Park reopened Wednesday after sample results met water quality standards. Beaches at Lewis and Clark State Park and Trail of Tears State Park remain closed for maintenance unrelated to water quality issues.
According to a press release from the Missouri DNR, a single sample does not provide a completely accurate sense of the water quality in the lake where the beach is located. The release says that during the recreational season, the Missouri DNR samples water at all designated beaches in the state park system weekly to determine suitability for swimming.
