Watkins Loses to Former Team
Watkins coached the Texas A&M Aggies for 6 seasons before being fired and joining Missouri as an assistant. For him and his son, junior forward Marcus Watkins, Tuesday night's game was a chance to play against some familiar faces.
"At first it was a little weird," admitted Marcus. "But, as the game went on, you realize it's just a game and we're competing against each other to win."
While at A&M, Melvin Watkins recruited Aggie guard Acie Law IV, who started against the Tigers.
"Acie and I talked after the game, and surely I want some good things to happen for that young man," added Melvin. "I just didn't want them to happen tonight."
But good things did happen for Law, who led the Aggies with 15 points. Despite the 54-51 loss, the Tigers still hope to extend their season beyond the Big 12 Tournament.
They can help their chances with a win this Saturday at Colorado. The Buffaloes won, 74-71, in January at Mizzou Arena.
The Tigers are 11-13 overall, 4-9 in the Big 12, and 1-2 under acting head coach Watkins.
