Weekly Wellness: Does Water Boost Metabolism?
As a trainer, I am constantly asked “how can I lose weight faster?” or “what can boost my metabolism?” Sometimes, people don’t want to hear the answers (because they are not quick-fix).
The basics of boosting metabolism are:
- Strength train
- Eat more lean protein
- Eat more healthy fats
- Eat less sugar
- Add more activity
There is one other thing you can do that some experts can’t seem to agree on: drinking more water.
Some studies show that drinking cold water can boost metabolism. One study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that drinking 500ml of water increased metabolic rate by 30% for over an hour. Essentially, when you drink ice-cold water, thermogenesis (bringing the temperature of the water from ice-cold to body temperature) does expend energy. Which does burn more calories.
But does drinking ice-cold water really burn a significant number of calories? Maybe not. But drinking water in and of itself is a great thing for your body overall.
Water keeps your kidneys functioning, allows your muscles and joints to work at their full potential and keeps you hydrated. Make sure you are drinking between 64 and 100 ounces of water daily.
