COLUMBIA - Wellness is a very broad term. Wikipedia suggests that "Wellness is generally used to mean a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being."

It was a term originally used in the 1950's, but the modern concept of wellness didn't become popular until the 1970's.

Wellness is said to be a combination of health and happiness. Regardless, it is a term and call to action that has been around for quite some time. So why is it still so challenging for some of us to incorporate it into our daily lives?

Many companies today offer wellness programs to their employees. Wellness programs are designed to improve employee morale, loyalty, and productivity. Some companies offer an on-site fitness centers, smoking cessation programs, nutrition training, stress management training, health risk assessments, and health screenings.

Overall "wellness" has many contributing factors: eating healthy food, regular physical exercise, balance in career; family; and relationships, and, in some cases, spiritual awareness and faith-based worship.

For the month of March, each week we will offer you our very own KOMU Weekly Wellness Online Program. Within our program, we will focus on:

  • Mental health: there are an estimated 54 million Americans who suffer from some form of mental disorder.
  • Sleep: do you know how much sleep you need to properly function? You might be surprised by the answer.
  • Nutrition: your nutrition and food choices can affect more than just your waistline.
  • Physical activity: we know we need to get exercise but how much and what kind? We will break it down for you.

My hope is that by the end of the month, you'll have a list of wellness goals set and a plan to succeed! I know you can do it! It's all about taking those baby steps.
