Westminster Drops Two of Three in SLIAC Baseball Series
FULTON, MO - Westminster College managed just five hits in losing the rubber game of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball series with Spalding University 4-0 Saturday.
Spalding takes the series two games to one to improve to 17-5-1 overall and 7-2 in league play. The Blue Jays drop to 8-16 overall and 4-8 in conference.
Westminster trailed 1-0 after seven innings Saturday when Spalding scored three runs on two hits and an error to secure the win. Five Blue Jays recorded singles in the game, with senior Brandon Zucker (0-2) taking the loss on the mound, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks. Freshman Tommy Bohnert pitched an inning and two-thirds in relief.
Westminster and Spalding went into extra innings tied 4-4 in Friday's opener, but Spalding tallied five runs in the top of the tenth inning for the win. Sophomore Danton Hughes and junior Matt Mallette each recorded two hits for the Blue Jays, and senior Mark Davidson (0-3) took the loss in relief.
The Blue Jays out hit Spalding 5-4 in capturing a 3-1 win in Friday's nightcap. Freshman Jordan Allen recorded two hits and drove in two runs in a three-run fourth inning to back the four-hit pitching performance of junior Kevin Moritz who struck out six batters over seven innings.
