FULTON - A Westminster College international student died Thursday morning after a bicycle accident Saturday. The student, Ruslans Petrovskis, 22, sustained severe injuries at the bridge over Stinson Creek on West Seventh Street in Fulton.

A pedestrian found Petrovskis on the walking trail below the bridge, administered first aid, and called officers to help. He was taken to the hospital and remained in critical condition. Petrovskis died from his injuries Thursday at University Hospital in Columbia.

"Ruslans was an important member of our Westminster family," said Westminster President George Forsythe. "His loss will be felt especially hard in a close-knit community like ours. We have lost one of our own and we are all feeling it."

Petrovskis was active in campus activities and worked in the Wetterau Center for Field Sports. He majored in business administration with an emphasis in marketing. Petrovskis was from Latvia.

Campus counseling services are offered to student who have reached out to Westminster for support.

The school said a celebration of Petrovskis' life will be held on campus at a time to be announced.
