JEFFERSON CITY - Governor Jay Nixon ordered most state workers to work Friday, a day that Missouri governors have traditionally given as a day off. While those workers put in a day in the office, Nixon met with military veterans and workers at a home in Mount Vernon. Afterward, Nixon met with the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Springfield to discuss travel safety.
Nixon said the reason behind canceling the extra holiday day was to save the state money. Nixon's office said employees such as prison guards who must work won't get to choose whether to claim extra time off or accept holiday bonus pay.
